Burger King. The Fewd Snobs found themselves at Burger King. We don’t know why. We’re not even drunk. Why do we do this to ourselves?
Do you readers remember when Burger King was actually decent? We do. Hell, we remember when it was pretty damn good. Any of you readers over 35 probably do to. It was better than the other fast food burger joints. Namely, it was better than McDonald’s. But then, suddenly something happened. And BK hasn’t been very good for a while now.
Despite the fact that Burger King typically kind of sucks, we have a duty to you, our dear readers, to provide you with honest reviews of new stuff. We tell you this all the time. So, when we saw the ad for the new BK Flame Grilled Chicken Burger, we braved the beerless, cold outdoors to review it. See how nice we are??
Burger King’s describes the sandwich on its website like this: “Our Flame Grilled Chicken Burger features a savory flame-grilled chicken burger patty topped with juicy tomatoes, fresh lettuce, creamy mayonnaise, ketchup, crunchy pickles, and sliced white onions on a soft toasted brioche style bun.”
Now, what is a chicken burger?
Herman is familiar with the concept. Denny was not. Denny expected a grilled chicken filet. Nope. More on that later…
Burger King is advertising the hell out of this sandwich right now. It is new, and will only be around for a limited time only.
We were pretty damn skeptical going in. We didn’t expect much here, people. But, we decided to try it anyway.
It doesn’t really have the most appetizing look, but the “burger” is chicken, after all. It appears grilled. All that matters is that it appears grilled, We don’t know if it actually is, but meh. We’re getting off topic.
Note that this really is a chicken burger. Essentially, the patty consists of ground chicken. This isn’t a filet. But, it also isn’t the separated, emulsified, put back together chicken patties, either. Take a good look. It may look gross because of the chunks, but the burger consists of ground chicken. Think of it like a chicken sausage patty. It is a pretty interesting concept that nobody else is really doing right now.
Let’s get the toppings out of the way before we get to the heart of the matter…or…the chicken of the burger. Wow, that was lame.
The toppings are pretty good, and as usual, there are plenty of toppings. In fact, the burger is drenched. But that is normal, so we won’t bitch. Lots of mayo and ketchup, tomato, pickles, onions, and ICEBERG LETTUCE. Thank you, Burger King, for using ICEBERG! None of that leaf crap everybody else is using. And the onions are NORMAL WHITE ONIONS, not pretentious red onions.
Overall, the toppings pass the test. They are good. That is all.
The bun is very good, also. We’re not sure we get the brioche part, but we are ok with that. Who cares. It is different than a regular bun. It has just a little crustiness to it. Good stuff.
Now, to the point. Here it is, people…
The chicken burger was good.
We are just going to say it; we did NOT expect this creation to be good. At all. In fact, we fully expected this to suck, and we expected to write a scathing review.
We cut a sandwich in half, and each of us ate the whole half before saying anything. Then, we both said to each other, “That was pretty good!” We were shocked.
The chicken patty, like we said, is made of ground chicken. It truly is a burger in the sense that the meat is ground. It is NOT a grilled chicken filet. It is NOT a breaded, white meat chicken patty like a McChicken. No kids, this is actually like a burger. Yet, the texture reminds us of a McRib. The texture is very similar. And that stands to reason, since ground chicken and ground pork will have a little bit different texture than ground beef.
It has a good chicken flavor. It isn’t too strong, but it is chicken after all. It isn’t going to be as strong as beef. There is a seasoning to it. Again, it isn’t overpowering. It is balanced. You can actually taste the meat on this burger. It does have the flame grilled taste, too. Herman checked the website, and he doesn’t see any fake smoke flavor added. We really think this IS flame grilled. This is good stuff, people.
And here is the best part…the burger itself is a decent size! The Whopper these days is tiny. There is hardly any meat on the burger. This chicken burger is easily over double the size of a Whopper burger. You can actually taste it WITH the toppings, unlike the Whopper. The toppings compliment the burger.
Overall, the flavors just mix very well.
In terms of value, it isn’t too bad. The burger itself is $4.99 in our area. Right now, Burger King is running a deal where you can get two of them for $5 (you can also mix and match other select sandwiches). Two of these for $5 is a pretty good deal. You would be stuffed. Even when this deal is over, you can get the burger in a meal with fries and a drink for about $7.79. That isn’t bad for the size of the burger.
Overall, we LIKE this burger. Both of us would get it again, no question. We almost never go back to places for limited time only deals. This one is good enough to cross the street for. Or even put down our beers for. WHAT?? DID WE JUST SAY THAT????!!
We were prepared to shit all over this one, people. But you won this time, Burger King. Well done.
